Gear Guide

We encourage buying secondhand gear to reduce environmental impacts and to support family budgets. Local thrift stores and consignment shops are great places to look. We will also host a gear swap in coming months to help pass on outgrown gear to other families.

Recommended Everyday Items

Backpack

A small, durable, comfortable backpack that can carry your child's filled water bottle and snack should be sent every class meeting.

Filled Water Bottle

Please send a filled water bottle large enough for a day's worth of water each gathering.

Lunch and Snack

Kids will only eat the food you provide. Please send a nutrient-dense snack and lunch.

Net

Not necessary, but nets are fun tools to use when observing life around us, whether in the meadows, forests, creeks, or ponds.

Fall and Spring Recommendations

Closed-Toe Water Shoes

For days when we are exploring water, closed-toe water shoes are recommended.

Hat

A sunhat or a baseball hat helps keep the sun off the face. If your child wears them, send a hat along!

Rain Gear: Rain Pants/Rain Suit/Waders/Rain Boots/Rain Jacket

We don't get a lot of rainy days, but when we do, we want everybody to be prepared to play in the wet conditions.

Light-Mid Weight Jacket

In the Fall and Spring, our mornings can be chilly. A fleece jacket or other light-mid weight jacket to wear before it warms up is recommended.

Shoes

When exploring dry areas, we recommend wearing running shoes or comfortable hiking shoes/boots.

Cold Weather Suggestions

Base Layers

Merino makes the best base layer! Other options include synthetic fibers, such as polyester. The most important thing is to avoid cotton as a base layer.

Waterproof Gloves/Mittens

If possible, please send two pairs of waterproof mittens/gloves on cold, snowy days.

Wool Socks

Wool socks will help keep feet dry and warm.

Insulated Waterproof Boots

When feet get wet and cold, playing and learning outside is much more difficult.

Snow Pants and Coat or Snowsuit

Snowsuit or coat and snow pants - as long as it is warm!

Warm Hat or Balaclava

If possible, please send two hats when cold weather is upon us. Sometimes during play and exploration, hats get snowy and wet.

How to Layer

Base Layer

This layer is worn next to the skin and wicks away moisture. Merino wool or wool blends are best, but synthetic fibers also work. Just be sure to not layer cotton next to the skin.

Mid Layer

The mid-layer adds insulation to retain warmth. Fleece or knit leggings work well.

Outer Layer

The outer layer keeps the elements out. It should be waterproof, windproof, and durable.
